The operation to create a no-fly zone in Libya has just begun, but already conservative Fox News pundit Bill Kristol is wishing the U.S. would send in ground troops "sooner rather than later."

U.S. President Barack Obama said Saturday the "Odyssey Dawn" operation launched under a UN Security Council resolution was a "limited military action," unlike the regime change aims of the war against Iraqi president Saddam Hussein.

He pledged no U.S. troops would be deployed on the ground

Fox News Chris Wallace asked Kristol Sunday if it was a mistake to limit the mission in Libya.

"Let's talk about the mission," Wallace began. "You heard Admiral Mullen, earlier in the show, say his orders are clear: protect the civilians, don't overthrow Gaddafi. That's not the point. Is that a mistake? Can we live with Gaddafi in any sort of power? He can create a lot of trouble."

"No, we cannot leave Gaddafi in power," Kristol agreed. "And we won't leave Gaddafi in power."

"The immediate military mission, Admiral Mullen correctly described but the political goal is to remove Gaddafi and ultimately military assets will serve that political goal."

"First we protect civilians and destroy his military capability. And then we help other remove him indirectly, presumably. Though I, unlike the president, would not rule out ultimately having to go in with peacekeeping and nation stabilizing forces. And I wouldn't be surprised if we do that at the end of the day," he added.

So ... Kristol wants us to do exactly what we did in Iraq, 'cause that worked out so well.

What a maroon.

Another chicken hawk banging his desk for more US blood to be shed, so you can walk around and show how brave YOU are. We are in two wars all ready, and we are not the lead in this one, because unlike Bush, Obama had the intelligences to wait for the U.N. to declare and became part of the coalition, rather the loaner, when most of the U.N. decided not to help, if you want ground troops, I will pay your way and you can go ground troop all you want, if you live, you will be rich and famous, from the book you write.

We already know how ignorant those people are! Where exactly does he propose we get the Ground troops, a Draft? I don't even like it that we are doing what we are, but at least it is just to aid the U.N. We can't have ANOTHER war...........we are *warred* out! Plain and simple.

G.H.

Why have a problem with the draft....I would stipulate that the first to go would be the draft eligible children of elected officials no getting around it. While I know there are elected offcials that have children in the war now but the vast majority might think differently if it hits them directly from a personal level.

The far right has no concept of what goes on in a military action. I guess we can thank Bush for spreading the ignorance to an extent.

We are NOT at war with Libya. No one has declared war. We are NOT going to have troops on the ground. This is part of establishing a "no fly zone" mission. The UN was involved in the decision. The Arabic League sanctioned this. We are NOT the only Western country involved.

This was the ONLY alternative to try and stop Gaddafi from killing his own people. The president and others involved didn't go off half-cocked like others would have.

It really doesn't matter whether one agrees or not on the "boots on the ground" 'cause there will be. I have a few ideas on whose boots should be on the ground!

Send groud troops? What would they be there for? Why are WE involved? For the good of the people of Libya? It is about OIL nothing more. Our government wants it and they will doing everything they can to get their hands on it regaurdless of cost or how many Americans are killed. Maybe our fearful leaders should go and leave our troops home.

I hope this doesn't turn into something that we were not planning for. Like another serious war. I don't think that was the mission.

I have a suggestion that might help this nation. I think the US citizens should tell Bill Kristol and the fox family that if they want boots on the ground, they should be the individuals in the boots, not our young men and women.

gene, I always love to hear how Fox would "fix things", but it's obvious that they wouldn't know their collective butts from a hole in the ground, as Grandma use to say.

Darrah:

The reason we're in a gazillion dollar hole is that the Kristol brigade wanted boots on the ground, not once, but twice.

I only want one boot on the ground, I want the other boot in the air kicking Bill Kristol and Chris Wallace in the butt.

The UN will use it's Air Power to destroy Libya's Air Force, Radar Installations, Surface to Air Missiles, Anti-Aircraft Guns, Tank Corps, Armored Personnel Carriers, Mortars, and Supply Lines. Then the Rebellion will be the Rebels to win or lose.

One thing that some people might be overlooking --Libyan rebels DO NOT want foreign troops on the ground. As someone pointed out on TV, they have publicly made this statement. All they want is the no-fly zone enforced.
