“I’m fine,” Derek Jeter usually says when he is hit in the ribs or the hand by a pitched ball, or is suffering from a bug. Managers and teammates smile when he says he’s fine.
Jeter was not saying he was fine on Tuesday in the hours before he was placed on the 15-day disabled list after a consultation with Dr. Chris Ahmad, the team physician. He was not proclaiming he could go out and play.
“I mean, I would if they said I could,” Jeter said, but nobody was saying that, not even Jeter.
