In need of a frontline starting pitcher for their needy rotation, the Angels snatched one of the best available arms in the trade market on Friday, acquiring Zack Greinke from the Brewers in exchange for three promising prospects -- middle infielder Jean Segura, and right-handers John Hellweg and Ariel Pena -- the Angels announced.
The team also announced shortstop Erick Aybar would be placed on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured right toe, with shortstop Andrew Romine recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake. Also, Vernon Wells (right thumb) was reinstated off the DL, taking Segura's spot on the active roster.
Greinke won't be placed on the roster until he reports to his new team, at which point the Angels would have to make a corresponding move.
"It should be fun," Greinke said. "They're a great team. I think the first month they struggled, but since [then], they're one of the best teams in baseball. [They have] a lot of great players, good pitching. The pitching staff will be pretty incredible."
