Though Cubs legend Ron Santo didn't live to see his induction Sunday into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, alongside Reds great Barry Larkin, his widow, Vicki Santo, reminded everyone in attendance at Cooperstown that this was certainly a happy day.
Santo, who made as big of an impact off the field as on the field, was elected posthumously last December by the Golden Era Committee. The nine-time All-Star had died from complications of bladder cancer one year earlier.
"But this is not a sad day, not at all," Vicki Santo said while making the acceptance speech in honor of her late husband. "This is a very happy day. It's an incredible day for an incredible man. A man who lived an extraordinary life to its fullest. Indeed, he had a wonderful life."
